i'm posting a temporary link to some new songs. the first song is a room demo, but i thought it sounded pretty good as such. i'm a bit whiny. the next song is the more-or-less final version of "acceptable loss". the third is a really great tune Brian wrote. it's just him on there at the moment, but it's a cool song.

I've been reading this comic book lately called Animal Man. I don't know how I've never managed to read it up until now. It's extremely well written and, while I'm not super keen on the art, I do think it does an allright job of capturing the tone of the book. it's very post-modern and explores the nature of fiction and reality in general. Definitely ranks right up there with Sandman, Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns, etc.

here's a link to a pretty good primer on the book if you're interested.

Feb. 10th, 2006 @ 02:58 pm an update, believe it or not
this is the first update in for fricking ever, i know.

anyway, i've been doing stuff lately. like school mostly, but i've also been spending a lot of time at "band" practice. we're getting dangerously close to actually having a complete album on our hands, which is exciting for me; it feels nice to have some ideas i've had kind of floating around in my head for the last couple of years fleshed out in musical format.

i've seen some good shows lately. Stars and the Elected a few days ago. Stars live are a little to melodramatic for me, but their music is great. the Elected sounded, frankly, stunning live -- way better than I would have expected based on their records. i'd see their live show again in a second, but I doubt that i'll ever be a real fan of the band.

Two weeks ago we went to Rat Cat Hogan, which is this sorta old-school seattle group (the lead singer's from Omaha though..) anyway, they were okay, but Ben Gibbard, John Cale (from the Long Winters), and the dude from Harvey Danger were all there and decided to get up on stage and do some tunes. it was like an impromptu indie supergroup assembly which, as expected, didn't actually sound that great, but was fun anyway.

stuff i've been listening to lately:

Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
Band of Horses - Everything all the Time
Revolutionary Hydra
Sera Cahoone
Long Winters - ultimatum
Cat Power - The Greatest

Sarah dyed her hair this week... I'll post a picture soon.

It snowed yesterday, which is pretty uncommon for Seattle. The ground was too warm for any to stick, unfortunately. The good news is that I get to come home for Christmas. I don't know how much time I'll be around in the lincoln / omaha area, but hopefully I'll get to see some of you people. I'll be home from the 23 - 29.

So tonight I went to Taco Bell for the first since having moved away, and let me tell you, it tasted pretty damn good. However, as usually happens about an hour after eating there, I feel queasy and gross.

So having recently watched that Saddle Creek DVD, I've decided I really like Lullaby for the Working Class. I have a couple EPs and blanket warm, but does anybody happen to have a copy of 'Song'? I'd like to hear that one. ALso, have you guys been paying attention to the new Neutral Milk Hotel songs surfacing? A couple are up already, I think the whole tape is going to be released (for free download) soon. try www.neutralmilkhotel.org

well, this may very well be my most inane update yet, I guess i haven't done anything too exciting lately.

oh, i almost forgot, check out this law: http://www.sensibleseattle.org/text.php

Well, as usual my update is spurred on mostly by wanting to post a song. here's the more-or-less finished version of 10th planet. all the parts are there, but the vocals may be re-recorded. i'd love to have some constructive criticism, no sugar coating necessary.

I saw "The Squid and the Whale" last night. Really good companion film to all the wes anderson movies, I'd definitely recommend it. There's some really great dialogue.

Nov. 17th, 2005 @ 11:13 am Stephen Malkmus
Current Music: Christopher O'Riley
so, the Malkmus show last night was friggin fantastic. all acoustic versions of a bunch of his solo stuff AND pavement! he talked with some dude from the New Yorker for a half hour and then played for an hour. after the interview session I had the opportunity to ask a few questions, to summarize his responses:

1. Despite his formal education, he does not write lyrics with higher literary theory or a particular philosophy in mind. However, apparently Isaac Brock is doing just that, working with some professor from virginia or something on his new album.
2. He doesn't think the Omaha scene is mostly a bunch of poseurs. he really like Fevers and Mirrors but doesn't listen to Rilo Kiley.

i recommend checking out the video clips below too.

I don't have much to post as usual. Stuff's going good and all that. My main concern right now is whether I'll be able to make it back for christmas or not. I really want to come home, but with Sarah's work schedule I don't know what we're going to be able to do.

also, here's a song I wrote.

Well, here's that room demo I said I'd put up. I hope to have a track-recorded version pretty soon, we're working on it.
10th planet

I just finished Confederacy of Dunces. I probably should have read it a long time ago as it was one of the most enjoyable and intelligent books I'd read in a while. Here's one of my favorite quotes:

"Then you must begin a reading program immediately so that you may understand the crises of our age," Ignatius said solemnly. "Begin with the late Romans, including Boethius, of course. Then you should dip rather extensively into early Medieval. You may skip the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. That is mostly dangerous propaganda. Now that I think of it, you had better skip the Romantics and the Victorians, too. For the contemporary period, you should study some selected comic books.... I recommend Batman especially, for he tends to transcend the abysmal society in which he's found himself. His morality is rather rigid, also. I rather respect Batman."

Also, I've started reading the Brothers Kasamarov. I like it so far, we'll see what happens.

allright, here's an update.

i've been very busy with school, but in a good way. I'm doing some work on viruses for use in gene therapy. suffice it to say, I will have cured all known disease by sometime next week. but seriously, it's going well.

_jamas_ was here this last weekend. we had a lot of fun, and I recommend you check out the pictures on his page.

my little musical group has been hard at work as well. we're working on the track recording of another song, 10th planet, which I will put up a room recording of soon. Sarah has now joined us on the clarinet, and Mike's friend Jim is going to play as well as a multi-instrumentalist (as opposed to a mentalist; actually, having a mentalist in the group would be pretty sweet).

Movies I've seen: Mirromask - fucking awesome visuals, decent story; It's Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman
Me and You and Everyone We Know - really weird wes anderson-esque indie film. it's strange and sad but also really funny.
Grizzly Man - best movie I've seen this year, or close to it. the film has little to do with bears and a lot to do with the psychology of one very strange man. definitely, definitely see it.

perhaps i'll update more soon.

Current Music: New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
Well, my time of leisure is coming to an end. I have stuff to do tomorrow, monday, and tuesday, and then classes start on wednesday. however, my schedule looks pretty good as does my rotation project.

So I've done some pretty cool stuff lately. Monday and Tuesday I went to a retreat up a semiahmoo, an incredible resort on a peninsula in Pugent Sound on the border of Canada. While all the talks got a little old, the retreat itself was a blast. There was tons of great food and lots of alcohol all the time, so that was great. Monday night there was bonfire out on the beach where everyone got drunk and other stuff too, so that was a lot of fun. Do scientists know how to party or what?!?

Stuff I've been listening to: New Pornographers: Twin Cinema, Iron and Wine / Calexico, Paul McCartney's new album, Devendra Banhart: Cripple Crow. Lot of good stuff to listen to right now. Also, I'm seeing Clap Your Hands Say Yeah on the 29th, so that should be a lot of fun.

oops, almost forgot to mention that the new season of justice league has started. If you missed the first two episodes last week, you should definitely check them out this saturday.

well, this will be mostly a visual update. I'm going to post pictures of our new house, as well as some pics from our camping trip to Mount Rainier National Park. Sarah had never been camping before, so it was quite the adventure. I must say that Mount Rainier is an absolutely beautiful park and I'd love to go back again.

Well, big news: Sarah and I got engaged yesterday! I’m really nervous and excited at the same time, but mostly I’m just happy to know I’ll get to spend my life with such a great person. We got engaged at 6:30 am at Gas Works park during sunrise and then went out for a fancy French breakfast at the café Campagne. It was a pretty great morning for me. Anyway, so that’s it; I don’t know if this is going to catch a lot of people off guard or not, but there you have it!! BTW, we won’t be having a wedding for at least a year, so that’s the scoop there.

I'm really glad that it's almost september, as Sarah will get here and the other MCB students will start to arrive. I never thought I'd say it, but sitting around doing nothing after work every day is getting kind of old. I have definitely wasted way too much time screwing around on the computer due to sheer boredom. I've also watched a lot of stuff on DVD, and I can't really afford to keep that up. Last night I finished watching the first season of Batman the Animated Series, which is an excellent cartoon. The stories and animation are so much better than most cartoons coming out at the time.

Work has been going really well. I picked a great first lab to start in, and I wouldn't be suprised if I come back to do my thesis work. The PI and all the other lab members are great.

...what else... not much really. I'm getting together with Michael tomorrow night; I think we're going to jam for a while and then maybe go to a show or something.

I don't know if any of you guys have been paying attention to the Roberts stuff lately, but what a fucking douche. I can't believe a guys who doesn't support equal pay for women and is apparently okay with gender discrimination is going to be on the supreme court. wow.

So I think I have a new house! I'll update more on that when it's all for sure, but yeah, it's a pretty sweet deal. I'm quite excited.

Last night I went to this show, The Gossip, which was okay. Their singer was pretty amazing, but I'm not sure how I felt overall about their music. I'll have to give their CD a listen. I did get hit on by this male bartender, a nice little ego boost. I have to say, though, on the whole the show was emo-tastic, not in a good way. You know that haircut a lot of guys get where it's really long in front and kind of all pushed forward, a little spikey? EVERYBODY had it. uber lame. it was an all ages show with a lot of high school kids, which i think was the main problem. also it was a blood brothers show (who we didn't stay for), which might also help explain the crowd.

Head of Femur is tonight... Do I want to go alone? I've seen them like 3 times before. Unless I get together with Cortney or Michael, probably won't go to it.

I'm itching to play with the guys this weekend, but Brian is out of town. Bummer, but Michael and I are probably going to get together tomorrow and just work out some quieter, acoustic stuff, so that'll be fun.

Stuff I've been listening to lately:

The Silver Jews - I think they have a new album coming out I haven't heard yet. It's very 90s indie rock; the singer doesn't actually do much singing, but the music is pretty good, probably due to the inclusion of Stephen Malkmus. Which brings me to another point, why the hell aren't you all listening to Pavement more? I love that band more every time I listen to them. If anybody's inclined I can send you any of their albums.

The Go! Team - kind of like Caribou, mostly just fun dance atmosphere music. pretty good to jog to . this album has been around for a while, but I finally got around to listening to it.

Olivia Tremor Control - yet another fantastic Elephant 6 band, one I should have been listening to a looong time ago

Fruit Bats - not as good as their last album, but still very worth checking out

Here's a few names for our band we've been throwing around (most of them are half-joking):

Uncle Travelling Matt
Songs From and Inspired By The Motion Picture Cotton Candy
The Fucking Awesomes
the monochromatic prime minister and her fleet of small majors
cabinesque

right now we all kind of like Uncle Travelling Matt, but aren't married to it.

I just did this thing this morning. I'm a little suprised that I turned out quite this high on the liberal scale; i figured i might be slightly more conservative on the defense and crime or something.

Jul. 31st, 2005 @ 06:33 pm CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS!!!
Current Music: Carissa's Wierd - You Should Be At Home Here
Stuff I’ve done or thought about lately:

• Went and saw Band of Horses today at the Capital Hill Block Party. They were very good as before. I was originally planning on going back to see Built to Spill tonight, and I still may, but I’m leaning away from it. I’ve determined it sucks nuts to go to concerts alone.

• Found a used copy of Carissa’s Weird “You Should Be At Home Here” today at Cellophane Square. I was totally floored to find it; pretty damn incredible. It usually goes for >$50.00 on ebay and is almost impossible to find even there. So I’m pretty happy about that. I also got a used copy of the Beatles’ White Album, so that was cool too.
• Had another session with the guys Friday night from 7:00  midnight. Things are going really well with it. You can check out our latest here: (between our cells we do not exist??!?)
• Work / school is great. I’ve been super pleased with how everything is going. However, I need to start figuring out where I’m doing my next rotation already! It seems to early, but whatever.
• Also, I’d just like to say that the last 5 episodes of Justice League Unlimited were fucking amazing and are probably the best show on television right now, aside from curb. I know what this sounds like, but I’m totally serious. Check it out. I can send you the eps via yousendit.com if you’re interested in watching.
• Rainer Beer is a terrific treat. I highly recommend you have yourself a rainier when you have the option. www.rememberrainier.com

All for now. Bye.
